The daughter of Ukrainian immigrants, the second of seven children, Vera Farmiga grew up in Irvington, a Ukranian-speaking enclave in New Jersey. She didn't learn to speak English until the age of six. The family moved to Hunterdon County when she was in junior high school.
Her acting career began in high school, when she tried out for a play after she was benched in soccer.
After some work in theater and TV and several unremarkable roles in film, 15 Minutes marked her breakthrough--a role that somewhat utilized her own Eastern European background.
Farmiga won Best Actress awards from the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association for her performance as a working class mother struggling to keep her marriage together and raise two sons while hiding her cocaine addiction in Down to the Bone (2003).
